In the realm of asset integrity management, proactive maintenance strategies are crucial for ensuring operational safety, reliability, and efficiency. This case study highlights the application of cutting-edge non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques to address a critical inspection challenge at a refinery facility.

The Challenge:  Assessing Structural Integrity of Debutanizer Tower Anchor Bolts During routine maintenance, an inspection team was tasked with evaluating the structural integrity of the anchor bolts securing the Debutanizer Tower T3. These bolts play a vital role in maintaining the tower’s stability, and any undetected flaws could potentially lead to catastrophic failures, compromising refinery operations and posing severe safety risks.  

Leveraging Total Focusing Method (TFM): A Game-Changer in Flaw Detection To tackle this challenge, the Advanced NDE team deployed the Total Focusing Method (TFM), a state-of-the-art ultrasonic inspection technique renowned for its exceptional resolution and accuracy in detecting subsurface flaws. TFM’s advanced imaging algorithms and full matrix capture (FMC) data gathering capabilities make it an ideal solution for critical infrastructure inspections.

The inspection process involved meticulous preparation, including calibrating the specialized TFM equipment and collecting FMC data from the 2-inch-diameter ASTM A320-L7 bolts. The team meticulously examined each of the sixteen stud bolts, leveraging TFM’s high-resolution imaging to identify even the smallest crack-like defects.

Actionable Insights and Comprehensive Recommendations The TFM inspection yielded valuable insights, revealing the presence of significant crack-like defects in three of the bolts (numbers 3, 9, and 15). Detailed documentation and analysis provided the refinery with crucial information on the location and severity of these flaws, enabling targeted maintenance actions.

Based on the findings, the Advanced NDE team recommended the immediate replacement of the affected bolts to mitigate the risk of catastrophic failures. Additionally, they advised implementing a periodic TFM inspection program to continuously monitor bolt integrity and collaborating with structural experts to evaluate the implications of the discovered flaws and develop long-term mitigation strategies.
